Surfing helped me realize I was focusing on the wrong things.
If I said that surfing helped me improve my life and grow my business, would you believe me? Well, it’s true! Many of you know that I have been trying to learn to surf for the last year and a half. There are a lot of lessons to learn from this activity, but recently I had one big revelation that I’m here to share with you all.
My lessons had been going pretty well, but then there was one moment when my instructor told me to put my head down. The problem was that I started to implement that each time that I surfed. That wasn’t going well, and I was becoming more and more unsuccessful. I was asking questions like, “What is wrong with me?”
“It is crucial to ask ourselves high-quality questions.”
Then one day, I realized that I needed to shift my mindset. I stopped asking what was wrong with me, and instead asked myself: “What changed? What have I been doing differently?” That’s when I realized I had been putting my head down. I had been focusing on where I was instead of where I wanted to go.
If you know much about surfing, you probably know that you cannot look at your board. You need to look at the wave ahead of you if you want to get anywhere. Then I started to wonder where else in my life and business was I focusing on where I was, instead of where I wanted to go.
At this time, I realized the importance of asking ourselves high-quality questions. We need to be focusing on future-based, research-oriented questions instead of problem-based ones. For example, we need to be asking ourselves about what changed instead of what’s wrong with us. Focus on how to move forward. If you want to go anywhere, you need to look there.
