Have you ever wondered what being a real estate agent is really like? I talk to so many people who are drawn to this career because of what they’ve seen on TV or social media. They picture the flexible schedule, the big commissions, and the excitement of showing beautiful homes.

But after years of working with agents, hiring and training new ones, and helping them build real businesses, I’ve realized there are a few big myths about what this career actually involves. I’m sharing them with you below.

1. Easy money. Once you’ve built a client base, it can be very rewarding, but getting started takes time, energy, and investment. You’ll spend on marketing, travel, and tools long before earning your first paycheck, since you don’t get paid until a deal closes. In the beginning, you’re essentially working for free until that happens.

2. Agents just show houses. If you’ve watched HGTV, it might look like that’s all we do, opening doors and collecting a big check at the end. In truth, that part is less than 10% of the job. Most of the work happens behind the scenes, from writing contracts and negotiating to studying the market, managing emotions, and coordinating with clients and other agents. There’s far more to this business than what people see.

3. Flexible schedule. This one makes me laugh because, yes, technically you can work whenever you want, but that usually means working all the time. There’s some flexibility, but only if you stay consistent with the work. Reaching out to clients, building relationships, and staying connected can’t just happen when you feel like it. If you only work occasionally, you’ll have occasional income. Consistency is what creates stability in this business.

After breaking down those myths, there’s one truth I always share: real estate can change your life. It changed mine! This career transformed my family’s financial future and opened doors I never imagined. It’s also deeply rewarding to help clients reach their goals or move through tough situations. It’s not easy and it takes hard work and time, but the results are worth it.
